Dress in Daily Life:

It is not necessary for you to bring a lot of clothes and shoes, because you have to put many other items into your luggage. Here are some tips about what to bring:

  • When you come to the United States, it is winter here, and it is a little bit colder than Shanghai. So you need to bring warm clothes with you such as down coats (羽绒服). For girls, if possible, the length of a down coat is better to be at the knee. It is usually warm in the classroom, so you might need to wear a thick sweater under your coat. In addition, 3-4 down coats or thick coats, 4 or more long-sleeved shirts and 2 or more scarves will be useful.

  • In summer, although it is hot outside, you will feel cold in classrooms, because the temperature of classrooms is around 20 degrees. So cashmere sweaters or thin jackets are good choices. You can bring 2 pieces of each; it is up to you.

  • There are no dress requirements on campus. In general, local students are dressed in casual style, such as T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers.

  • The good news is that the clothes in New Jersey are not expensive compared to Shanghai, and there is no tax on clothes on shoes. You can find some popular brands, such as A&F, American Eagle, GAP, H&M in malls or you can even do online shopping.

 Formal Dress:

Interviews and many presentations require formal dress:

Male: Suit, trousers, shirts, black or dark leather shoes, strap, dark socks and ties.

Female: Suit, trousers/dress, shirts, black or dark leather shoes, silk hose.

Shoes:

The leather shoes are a little bit expensive in the U.S. You should bring one or two pairs for formal dress. However, other footwear, such as slippers and sneakers are cheaper than leather shoes. So you can bring 2 pairs or more, even if you can buy them here. It is not a problem.
